5 Free Fun Activities to Try In 2018

Taking up new hobbies, going on adventures, and planning trips can get expensive. If you’re trying to reduce your spending, you may think you have to be boring and sit around every weekend with nothing to do just so you don’t spend money. But there are plenty of fun things to do that don’t involve spending any money at all.

Take a Hike

Spending time in the great outdoors is good for your body and soul, especially when the weather is nice. Other than gas for the car so you can drive to the location, you don’t need to spend any money. Look for hiking trails in your local area, places that are no more than an hour or two away, and make a day trip out of it. Pack a picnic lunch, invite some friends, and get outside. You may be surprised at how much you enjoy it and you may find yourself wanting to hike every trail in your area.

Learn Something New

Not all education is costly, there are many things you can learn to do for free. Take up a new hobby or learn a new language. Look for YouTube videos to teach you new skills. Check out Udemy for a variety of free courses that may interest you (Note: some are paid courses so be sure to filter your search to free ones). There are a variety of websites where you can take online classes to learn a new language and they usually offer a free-trial period. You can also find great courses for free on CD at your local library. Set a goal and get learning!

Have a Neighborhood Party

Get to know your neighbors or get together with ones you haven’t seen in awhile with a potluck neighborhood party. Everyone only needs to bring one dish and chances are you can make a great dish with what you already have in your pantry. Let the kids have water balloon fights and play hopscotch on a hopscotch board you draw on your driveway in chalk.

Start a Game Night Tradition

Invite friends over for a regular game night. Whether it’s a card game, a board game, or charades, everyone will have a blast playing along. Get together once a month and make it a potluck evening with everyone bringing something to share. It’s a night you’ll look forward to days in advance.

Become a Tourist

Most people never really see all the sights their city has to offer unless they have out of town visitors to entertain. Many museums and tourist sights are free and there are probably dozens of them within a short drive of where you live. Search for sights, make a list, then start visiting a new place every month until you’ve seen everything you want to see.

Having fun doesn’t always mean spending money. There are great ways to enjoy yourself without spending a dime. Challenge yourself to find a new free activity every month to try.
